NewYork-Presbyterian Health Matters Wins an Emmy

NYP’s Health Matters was honored for the moving story of veteran paramedic John Episcopo reflecting on September 11th.

On April 25, the New York Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences awarded NewYork-Presbyterian’s Health Matters an Emmy in the category of Human Interest: Program Feature/Segment. The video of veteran paramedic John Episcopo sharing his story as a first responder on 9/11 beat out six other nominees.

The original story ran on Health Matters with Episcopo vividly recalling his experience on September 11, 2001. On that day, NewYork-Presbyterian lost Keith Fairben and Mario Santoro, who were Emergency Medical Services members and Episcopo’s partners. “By us sharing the story, it’s fulfilling our promise that the people who died that day — our friends, our family, our co-workers — will not be forgotten,” said Episcopo.

The video was produced by Laura Swalm and Emily Driscoll, Video Producers in NYP’s Office of Communications, and directed by Swalm. It was the first Emmy win for NYP Health Matters; the team was nominated for two NY Emmys last year.  “We’re grateful to NYP paramedic John Episcopo for trusting us to tell his story and for helping us highlight the heroic work of our Emergency Medical Services team,” said Editorial Director Sharon Cotliar, who interviewed Episcopo for the piece.

“We’re thrilled that NYP Health Matters and our editorial team has received this wonderful recognition,” said Kate Spaziani, Vice President of NYP’s Office of Communications.
