My COVID-19 Story: Environmental Services Heroes

A very special cleaning crew from NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital stepped up in a time of need.

During the coronavirus outbreak, Environmental Services teams across NewYork-Presbyterian have played a critical role in protecting patients and employees by preventing the spread of the virus through careful cleaning. This is the story of one extraordinary team at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital who stepped up to serve, volunteering to be the crew to clean the rooms of all patients with COVID-19.

Erasmo Ramos
Environmental Services Manager

I’m really proud of the way they are doing their job. Even though we are facing a difficult moment, they always come with that energy, and they always work together. They motivate me as a manager to continue doing my job and doing my best. They really inspire me as a leader.

Eugenio Mesa
Environmental Services Worker and Team Leader

As part of the housekeeping department, we have a big part to play in preventing infection and contamination. I wanted to be part of the team to help out others. When Erasmo asked us if we could be part of this team that cleaned the rooms of patients with COVID-19, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted to be part of it. I wanted to help save somebody’s life, the same way all the nurses and doctors are saving people’s lives. Everyone is united right now. Everyone plays an important role.

Elizabeth Batista
Environmental Services Worker

We are a team doing the best we can together. When we see a bunch of rooms and we know patients will need those rooms, we get together, put on the equipment that we need, check each other. And then we have a plan. When we go inside a room, we know what we have to do to turn the room around.

I put myself in patients’ shoes. And that’s what I have in my mind. I’ve got to do the best I can. As a human being, I care about the patient. We are here for them.

Glenis Adames
Environmental Services Worker

I love cleaning. I love the environment here. I love seeing patients. I love the whole entire staff of NYP. I feel like I’m saving a life, me cleaning up the room.

Environmental Services Worker

What we do is very important. I wanted to be a part of this team because I want to make a difference. I want to help, like a lot of the people at the hospital who are doing their best to save lives. That’s the reason I joined.

Environmental Services Worker

With the pandemic we have right now, it’s dangerous because if you’re not careful, you could take it to your home, to your family. But I still want to help. Because I think as we help, we can eliminate this little by little.
