Dr. R. Kumar Kadiyala Named Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital

Dr. R. Kumar Kadiyala has been appointed chief of orthopedic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. Dr. Kadiyala, who is also an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, began his role in September.

He joined NewYork-Presbyterian in 2013, serving as chief of the orthopedic service at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital. Since moving to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Dr. Kadiyala has focused on establishing a multidisciplinary sports medicine program that will provide specialty care to athletes of all ages, with nonoperative and rehabilitation services as well as advanced imaging and surgical management. He will also develop the pediatric orthopedic surgery program to go beyond standard conditions to include cerebral palsy care, pediatric sports medicine, and joint preservation. In addition to the expanded services at the hospital campus, beginning in 2021 orthopedic patients in Brooklyn will also be able to receive care at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital’s Center for Community Health, a state-of-the-art, multispecialty outpatient treatment center that will offer high-quality preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic services.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Kadiyala join our leadership team,” says Rob Guimento, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist. “Dr. Kadiyala is a gifted and compassionate clinician who shares our commitment to providing the very best care to communities in Brooklyn. We look forward to working together to grow our program and give patients access to the orthopedic experts they need right in their own neighborhood.”

“Dr. Kadiyala is an exceptional orthopedic surgeon whose proficiency in clinical care and research helped propel the orthopedics program at NewYork-Presbyterian to be among the best in the nation,” said Dr. William N. Levine, the Frank E. Stinchfield Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and chief of orthopedics at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “An outstanding leader, Dr. Kadiyala is perfectly suited to advance the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist and bring it to the next level of excellence.”

Dr. Kadiyala attended Stanford University, earning M.D. and Ph.D. degrees in the school’s Medical Scientist Training Program. He then completed a residency in orthopedics at the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Program and fellowships in orthopedic trauma and hand/upper extremity surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, and Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kadiyala completed another fellowship in adult hip and knee replacement at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. In his more than two decades of experience treating patients of all ages, Dr. Kadiyala has been at the forefront of clinical care, basic science investigation, clinical outcome research, and orthopedic education. His clinical focus at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist will be the nonoperative and operative treatment of chronic conditions and musculoskeletal injuries affecting the hand, elbow, shoulder, and peripheral nerves.

“I am excited to build on the relationships, the hard work and the excellent care provided by the orthopedic surgeons who serve the members of the NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital community,” says Dr. Kadiyala. “We are going to continue providing outstanding quality and patient outcomes, and highlight the world-class orthopedic care that is right here in our backyard.”
