Dr. Iosif Gulkarov Named Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens

Dr. Iosif Gulkarov, a leading adult cardiac surgeon, has been appointed chief of cardiothoracic surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens, effective Oct. 1. Dr. Gulkarov was also recruited to Weill Cornell Medicine as an associate professor of clinical cardiothoracic surgery.

In his new role, Dr. Gulkarov will continue to grow the cardiothoracic surgery program at NewYork-Presbyterian Queens through increased interdepartmental collaboration, along with provider and community outreach. Dr. Gulkarov previously served as the hospital’s vice chief of cardiothoracic surgery.

Wayne Isom Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine. “We look forward to his leadership in enhancing our cardiovascular care offerings in the Queens community and beyond.”

Dr. Gulkarov joined NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in May 2022 from RWJBarnabas Health.

“I’m excited to continue working with this talented team to provide lifesaving, comprehensive and compassionate care to our patients,” said Dr. Gulkarov. “From consultation to post-operation care, I’m grateful to be part of our patients’ journeys and offer advanced cardiac therapies close to home.”

Dr. Gulkarov’s research interests focus on adult cardiac surgery outcomes. He has authored many peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters, and is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the New York Society for Thoracic Surgery, the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Thoracic Surgery and the American College of Chest Physicians.

Dr. Gulkarov earned his medical degree at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he completed his general surgery training and completed a cardiothoracic research fellowship. He received his cardiothoracic surgery training at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
